CAPTAIN QUARTERMASTER SAILING MASTER SURGEON GUNNER

An Introduction...

The Whydah is a unique archaeological treasure not only because she was the first pirate shipwreck ever discovered, but also because of the unprecedented cross-section of cultural material she carried.

What follows is a constantly growing sample of artifacts recovered, conserved, and documented by the Whydah Project Team over the past twenty years.

Despite the impression given by novels and movies, 18th-century ships were complex instruments and required a careful organization of labor. The pirates’ Articles, together with other longstanding maritime and piratical customs and practices, establish divisions of responsibility aboard pirate ships.

We accordingly present the artifacts according to these areas of responsibility.

A final note:

It is our responsibility and duty to present our findings to the public. Nonetheless, the support of the public in this effort is critical to the quality and pace of our work.

To that end, we wish to express our gratitude for your comments on these pages, as well as your donations toward this project.
